Home/Life Services, Inc.

Fact Sheet and Mission Statement

Home/Life Services, Inc.  was established in 1995 by Susan Alter and Gerald Schreck to provide transitional housing for the NYC Department of Homeless Services. We currently provide services to more than 5,500 individuals annually in 10 shelters in the Bronx, Queens and Brooklyn, holding contracts with the City of NY valued at over $380,000,000.

Home/Life Services, Inc.’s Mission

Our mission is to provide housing, social services, and a wide variety of targeted programming to adult couples, single mothers, and families with children in order to eliminate the barriers to independent living and thereby enable our clients to move into and thrive in a permanent housing setting. We are known as results-oriented and in fact are responsible for placing the longest-staying couple in the DHS system into permanent housing.

The Shelters

Our facilities vary: a 173-room 5 story elevator building in Canarsie, Brooklyn; a 55- room 5 story walk-up building in the Grand Concourse, Bronx; a 46-room 4 story elevator building in Crown Heights, Brooklyn; a 35 room 4 story walk-up building in Claremont Parkway, the Bronx; a 51 room 5 story walk-up building near Prospect Park, Brooklyn; a 43-apartment 6 story elevator facility in East Flatbush, Brooklyn, a 44-apartment 6 story elevator facility located in the Soundview section of the Bronx and an 89-room 3 story walk-up building in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, and a 154 room 12 story elevator facility in Long Island City, and a 68-apartment, 7-story elevator building in East New York. These shelters have undergone multimillion dollar renovation programs which included upgrades to each of the client rooms, new furniture, bathrooms, fire safety and sprinkler systems, new elevators, heating and electrical systems, exterior pointing and painting, new front entrances, landscaping, and the introduction of state-of-the-art security systems.

Throughout our network, we have over 275 NYS certified security guards. We have installed high resolution color cameras throughout all areas in our various facilities. Each camera is on a digital video recorder system monitored by both the security staff and site director with split-screen high-definition color monitors that playback and record events throughout our facilities.

Most of our staff are New York City residents and a good number come directly from the local communities. We are proud of our experienced and professional social service workers that are directors (MSW’s), social workers (LMSW’s), case workers, supervisors, housing specialists, substance abuse counselors, and community outreach workers. Our security department is staffed by certified security guards, shift supervisors, and a director of security. Our maintenance and kitchen staff are supervised by our building manager and kitchen supervisor. Overall supervision of Home/Life Services, Inc. is under regional site director Ms. Riquelma Moreno, MSW. Our current staff at the 173-room facility is augmented by an on-site medical component staffed by a healthcare provider that includes a physician, psychiatrist, nurse practitioners and other service personnel.

Clients are surrounded with service throughout the day and evening. Classes and group seminars are offered on-site by our own staff and by partnered organizations such as Hospital Audiences, Cornell University, Citibank, Brooklyn Botanic Gardens, Bridge Back to Life, and many others. Training in culinary arts, landscaping and gardening, and computers are part of our curriculum for building self-esteem and job skills. Counseling in all areas including harm reduction, budgeting, parenting skills, conflict resolution, anger management, etc. are offered in group settings as well as in one-on-one sessions.

A Final Word

We are committed to helping our clients – one by one – achieve their goals and strive toward a brighter day. Our track record of accomplishment has always been the result of working together with the communities in which we operate.
